The Story of Commonwealth National Bank 

Commonwealth National Bank was founded in direct response to the discriminatory practice of redlining. To understand our story, it’s important to understand the history of redlining in America. 

The Devastating Impact of Redlining

Redlining was started In the 1930s by the Home Owners’ Loan Corporation (HOLC). HOLC was a government-sponsored initiative to stabilize the housing market and prevent further economic decline during the Great Depression. However not every American was granted the same right to housing and economic security. 

HOLC marked neighborhoods with high Black populations as “risky” for investment, denying them access to mortgages and financial services. This did more than block homeownership for Black Americans and other marginalized populations—it created lasting disparities. Redlining led to lower property values, economic hardships, racial segregation, poor health outcomes, environmental issues, and educational inequalities. 

By 1968, when redlining was officially banned, its effects had already created deep-rooted economic disparities that have impacted formerly redlined communities to this day. In places like Mobile, Alabama—a city where over 50% of the population is Black—the impact was especially profound.

From Exclusion to Empowerment: The Founding of Commonwealth National Bank

In 1976, Commonwealth National Bank was established to address this injustice. We set out to provide financial services to those who had been excluded for so long. Our mission has always focused on racial and financial equity, offering much-needed loans to Black-owned businesses and families, and reinvesting in underserved neighborhoods.

Today, we remain one of only 14 Black-owned and operated-banks that happens to be in a majority-Black city, and the only one on the Gulf Coast.
